Umesh Shah

Umesh Shah completed his ‘BFA from Kathmandu University, Kathmandu, and his MFA from the Faculty of Visual Art at Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya (CG), India. He has held six solo exhibitions, in Nepal and India, and participated in many group exhibitions, including one in Japan. Umesh has also been involved in various workshops and participated in two international art camps in India. He has been awarded the First Prize at the district-level art event in Sarlahi, Nepal.
Umesh’s artistic visions lie in painting and etching, and his works often reflect the lifestyle of the Terai, particularly that of Sarlahi, where he spent his childhood. Growing up in a culturally rich environment, Umesh was deeply influenced by his grandmother’s Mithila art, which she painted using natural pigments and clay. This exposure to folk traditions has heavily inspired his creative journey.
He regularly returns to his hometown for inspiration, blending Mithila motifs with figures from the Terai region, helping to reveal the rich cultural identity of the area. Through his works, Umesh shows the artistic and cultural depth of the Terai, allowing viewers to recognize the unique creativity embedded in its traditions.
