Sagar Manandhar

Born in Kathmandu in 1985 and immersed in art from childhood, he followed his passion with academic excellence, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Painting with a Gold Medal from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. He further pursued his Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) at the same institution, again graduating with top honors and a second Gold Medal.
Sagar has held eleven solo exhibitions and participated in numerous groups shows both within Nepal and internationally. An active figure in the art community, he has contributed to over twenty art workshops, reflecting his commitment to artistic exchange and innovation.
Currently, he serves as a lecturer at Kathmandu University School of Arts – Centre for Art and Design, where he mentors emerging artists and contributes to curriculum development in contemporary visual arts.
His notable recognitions include:
- Prize for designing the flag of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (2002)
- First Prize in Painting at the National Exhibition of Art and Craft organized by NAFA (2011)
Sagar’s body of work is primarily centered on nature and its ever-evolving relationship with human perception. His earlier works explored environmental themes through geometric abstraction and symbolic use of color, emphasizing humanity’s impact on Earth. While his technique leans toward abstraction, his visual language remains deeply grounded in realism, science, and universal truths.
In recent years, he has turned his focus toward celestial phenomena, especially eclipses, using them as metaphors to explore natural cycles, light and shadow, and the transience of time. His compositions simplify the visual complexity of such events, aiming to distill their aesthetic and symbolic power into an immersive visual experience.
