Surendra Pradhan

Surendra Pradhan (Born on 1965 in Kathmandu) was a renowned Nepali contemporary painter known for introducing a distinctive Cubist style into modern Nepali art. Born in Kathmandu, he studied under artist R.N. Joshi before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the prestigious Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai, India, in 1989. His artworks beautifully combined modern Cubist techniques with Nepali culture, traditions, festivals, musicians, and everyday life, making him one of the most influential figures in Nepal’s modern art movement.

Throughout his artistic career, Surendra Pradhan held 12 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in Nepal and abroad. He received several awards for his artistic achievements and also contributed to art education in Nepal as a faculty member at Lalitkala Campus. His paintings continue to inspire generations of Nepali artists and art lovers, preserving his legacy as one of Nepal’s most respected modern artists. His use of bold colors, geometric forms, and expressive compositions gave his artworks a unique visual identity. Many of his paintings reflected the social and cultural spirit of Kathmandu Valley and traditional Newar life. Over the years, his works were collected by art enthusiasts and galleries both in Nepal and internationally. He played an important role in promoting contemporary Nepali art to a wider global audience. Even after his passing in 2017, his artistic influence remains strong within Nepal’s modern art community.
